Sara Huxley

Drawing on her background in fine art textiles, Huxley weaves together colour, texture, and pattern to build richly layered compositions that feel both tactile and expressive.

Her practice often celebrates the joy of shared moments. Working primarily with acrylic paint, inks, graphite, oil stick, and collage made from hand-printed newspaper, Huxley constructs her paintings through an intuitive process of layering and reworking. Surfaces are built up gradually, with earlier marks and textures allowed to emerge through subsequent layers, creating a sense of depth and history within each piece.

Inspired by the warmth of shared moments and human connection, Huxley’s work radiates energy and intimacy. She is drawn to warm, colourful palettes that echo the emotional resonance of everyday experiences. Organic forms, particularly imperfect pots and bowls, frequently appear in her compositions — their irregularities celebrated as marks of authenticity and the beauty of the handmade.

Collage plays a central role in her process. Newspaper is painted, printed or stuck directly onto the canvas, then removed, cut, and reassembled, allowing positive and negative shapes to interact. These cut-outs speak to the passage of time and the dialogue between presence and absence, structure and spontaneity.
